Students from all Frisco ISD high schools competed in the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Academic State Meet held at Princeton High School, and the State Speech and Debate Meet held virtually this year.
The UIL offers 30 high school academic contests. These activities, which exist to complement the academic curriculum, are designed to motivate students as they acquire higher levels of knowledge, to challenge students to confront issues of importance and to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate mastery of specific skills. Students are challenged to think critically and creatively, exhibiting much more than just knowledge and comprehension.
Congratulations to Wakeland High School students Shyamli Channabasappa, Ishani Kaul, Geetan Madala and Trace Tuthill who are the UIL 5A State Champions in Current Issues and Events. They were also the UIL District champions and UIL Regional champions.
In the UIL Current Issues and Events competition, students participated in a rigorous series of 40 multiple-choice questions that tested their knowledge of current state, national and global events. The contest also included an essay that challenged students to understand not just what is happening in the world today, but why and how itβs happening and what it means to them as citizens.
Several students from Centennial, Heritage, Independence, Liberty and Wakeland high schools earned individual medals. There were top-ten finishes in everything from Poetry to Persuasive Speaking.
Students qualified to compete at the state level after placing in the top three individually or as a team at both the district and regional meets this past spring. Congratulations to these students who medaled at the UIL Academic State Meet:
