Frisco ISD is happy to announce the creation of a new swimming and diving club that will help serve the needs of children in the Frisco area.
The club, named Iron Horse Aquatics, is owned by Frisco ISD but will be open to swimmers and divers ages 5 to 18 from areas beyond the Frisco and FISD boundaries. Iron Horse Aquatics will operate out of the Bruce Eubanks Natatorium, as well as the additional FISD swimming and diving facility that is currently under construction and expected to open in October.
Iron Horse Aquatics, which will be a USA Swimming member club and compete in year-round USA Swimming sanctioned competitions, will be separate from FISD swimming and diving programs. But FISD swimmers will be eligible to join the club, which will hold practices several times per week.
“The goal for Iron Horse Aquatics is to provide more opportunity for swimmers and divers to develop their skills without having to leave Frisco,” said Iron Horse Aquatics Head Coach Matt Franks. “The club will offer a supportive environment that allows athletes of various ages and competitive levels to have fun as they learn, improve and pursue their goals up to the highest levels of competitive swimming in the state and the nation.”
Franks has more than 20 years of coaching experience and most recently led the swimming and diving program at Lovejoy High School. In his years as a high school coach and with the Metroplex Aquatics club team, Franks has coached numerous University Interscholastic League state qualifiers, as well as several high school All-Americans and U.S. Olympic Trials qualifiers.
Anyone interested in trying out for Iron Horse Aquatics should be able to successfully complete a minimum of 25 yards in freestyle, backstroke and either breaststroke or butterfly. Tryout sessions are planned for September 11-15 at the Bruce Eubanks Natatorium, and those interested can get a specific tryout time, as well as more information about the club, by filling out the Iron Horse Aquatics Interest Questionnaire.
Once tryouts are complete, the athletes chosen for the team will receive email invitations to join the club. The goal is for Iron Horse Aquatics to hold its first practices in early October.
The Iron Horse name honors the role that the railroad and train depot played in Frisco’s growth and expanded opportunities for residents. Along those lines, and in step with FISD’s mission of maximizing opportunities for young people, Iron Horse Aquatics will offer the chance for young athletes to further their development in swimming and diving.
For many years, the FISD natatorium’s popular learn-to-swim classes have introduced children to swimming. When those lessons were completed, however, the new swimmers did not have a club hosted by the natatorium that they could join.
Iron Horse Aquatics will now provide that convenience, as well as create a club option for more experienced swimmers and divers who compete in age-group levels and in high school competition. Iron Horse Aquatics athletes of all ages will practice in the home venue for FISD, which is established as a powerhouse in swimming and diving with seven University Interscholastic League team state championships.
“We are very excited about launching this program,” Franks said. “We hope that over the next several years it will produce the next generation of championship-level swimmers and divers for Frisco ISD and the community beyond.”
