Enrollment in Frisco ISD schools has grown by more than 2,400 students over the past year, including a jump of 1,365 students since the last day of the 2020-21 school year in May.
The increase brings total enrollment in Frisco ISD above 65,600 students as of Sept. 13, including the more than 8,300 students enrolled in the District’s online learning program.
This school year, FISD welcomed its largest ever kindergarten class, with more than 4,000 students enrolled. The District’s largest class is the Class of 2025, currently high school freshmen, with nearly 5,700 students.
The overall increase in enrollment has contributed to higher numbers of students at some schools, particularly Reedy and Lone Star high schools, which are currently serving more students than the buildings were designed to accommodate. Capacity at all FISD high school campuses is 2,100, but both Reedy and Lone Star currently have more than 2,200 students on campus.
West-side high schools, including Reedy and Lone Star, will be relieved by the opening of the new Panther Creek High School next fall. Panther Creek will serve students in grades 9-11 in its first year, before becoming a full 9th-12th grade campus in the 2023-24 school year.
In addition to easing crowding at those campuses, attendance boundary modifications will also ensure all FISD high school campuses remain under the University Interscholastic League (UIL) cutoff for 5A schools. The Frisco ISD community has repeatedly reaffirmed its desire for smaller high schools that provide a wealth of opportunities and experiences for students.
FISD is preparing to introduce proposed attendance zones for Panther Creek High School, as well as the new Minett Elementary, at the next regular School Board meeting on Oct. 12. Both campuses are currently under construction near the new PGA headquarters and golf courses in northwest Frisco and will open to students in fall 2022.
Minett Elementary will serve students in grades K-5 upon opening and will relieve Miller and Newman elementary schools. As of this summer, FISD closed Newman Elementary to additional students, with newly enrolled students attending nearby campuses instead.
In addition to changes to accommodate the new schools, the District will also propose boundary modifications to effectively utilize space, balance enrollment in existing schools and promote student opportunity. At the high school level, this includes proposed changes to existing zones for Frisco, Lone Star, Memorial, Reedy and Wakeland high schools.
The full timeline for consideration of attendance zones for the 2022-23 school year is listed below. Parents and students will be invited to provide feedback on the proposed zones on Oct. 25 before a final decision is made at the regular November School Board meeting.
