Centennial beat Amarillo in the 5A state semifinal and now aims to win Frisco ISD's first team tennis state title.

Updated Wednesday, Oct. 25:

The Centennial tennis team is back in the 5A state championship after a 10-2 victory over Amarillo in Wednesday's rain-delayed semifinal in Waco. The Titans avenged a loss to Amarillo in last year's title match to earn a spot in the 5A state title match in Waco at 3 p.m. Thursday (Oct. 26).

Original story:

A year ago, Centennial became the first school in Frisco ISD history to qualify a team for the UIL State Team Tennis Tournament. This week, the Centennial tennis team hopes to make even more history as it pursues a UIL state championship.

Centennial (21-2) will play Amarillo (21-4) on Wednesday (Oct. 25) at 11:30 a.m. in the 5A state semifinals at Waco Regional Tennis Center. A win in the semifinals would advance Centennial to the 5A state championship match at 3 p.m. on Thursday, where the Titans would face the winner of Austin Liberal Arts and Science Academy (19-0) and Boerne Champion (17-4).

Centennial earned a second straight trip to the state tournament by beating Lebanon Trail 10-2 in the 5A Region II final on Friday. The Titans will next face Amarillo, the team that it lost to in last year’s 5A state championship match.

It has been another fantastic season of tennis for Frisco ISD, which started the season with seven of its teams ranked in the top 20 in 5A by the Texas Tennis Coaches Association. Playing in three districts in the UIL alignment, FISD tennis teams claimed every playoff spot available to them. Centennial was the District 10-5A champion and Wakeland was the 9-5A champion.

Tickets for the UIL state tennis tournament are $15 per day and $25 for a two-day tournament pass. Tickets must be purchased online. The full tournament schedule is here.

Congratulations to all the FISD tennis teams for a great season and good luck to Centennial at the state tournament. Go Titans!
