ESL Programs (PreK - 12th grade)

English as a Second Language (ESL) is an intensive instructional program designed to develop proficiency in the listening, speaking, reading, and writing of the English language. Student eligibility for the program is determined through the administration of an English language proficiency test, and parent permission is required for entrance into the program. All instruction is provided in English and utilizes the TEKS and the ELPS for the cultivation of English language skills and the promotion of academic success in all grade level content areas.

Program Goals

The goal is for students to learn academic content with language support while being fully immersed into the English language.

• Immersion into the English language with targeted language support

• Asset based approach using native language to support as needed

Students in the ESL program are provided language support so that they will listen, speak, read and write in English while gaining academic content knowledge.

Elementary ESL

The ESL program for pre-kindergarten through fifth grade values the inclusion of Emergent Bilinguals in general education classes with their native English-speaking peers.  

Secondary ESL

The ESL program offers classes in grades 6 through 12 and encourages content-based language instruction (CBLI) in the core content areas of math, science, and US History. Students may be enrolled in an ESL class in place of or in addition to an English class depending on the student’s individual language level.
