Chasing Childhood, a feature documentary, was filmed before the Covid-19 pandemic, but the crucial questions explored throughout the film are profoundly relevant today. In communities across America, free play has virtually disappeared for today’s children, while stress and expectations for performance, achievement, and busyness have skyrocketed. Parents, children, and experts alike are ringing the alarm bell about the dramatic rise in anxiety and depression in young children and teens—and championing the antidote that less adult oversight and more free play could offer, such as grit, independence, and resourcefulness. The film profiles three distinct communities engaging in a culture shift to create room for play and independence.
