The Frisco ISD approach to literacy encompasses phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, written composition, grammar, and handwriting instruction. This instruction occurs through a series of workshops, which begin with direct, explicit instruction followed by opportunities for students to apply the learning through independent and collaborative practice. During independent and collaborative practice, students receive targeted feedback and differentiated instruction based on assessment and observational data. Our goal is to cultivate and deepen the purpose of reading and writing by creating a community of lifelong readers and writers. Students read, write, and communicate on a daily basis. As students read increasingly complex texts across multiple genres, they make real life connections and formulate their own perspectives. Students explore different types and styles of writing and discover their own sense of voice to develop their writing skills. Through the use of multiple learning and instructional strategies, students acquire not only the knowledge and skills they need, but also confidence in their own abilities to learn and to communicate effectively in real-world situations.
The Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) are the standards in which we base our curriculum and instruction. The TEKS include knowledge and skills for reading, writing, listening, speaking, and thinking. Students become critical readers, writers, thinkers, and communicators through active participation in authentic classroom experiences.
