The Counseling Department is responsible for providing lessons to students PK-12 to address the development of character, promoting a positive culture to positively impact school safety, and other topics defined by the Texas Education Agency. Frisco ISD uses highly qualified practitioners within the department and does not purchase curriculum from an outside vendor to meet this requirement. Our district has prioritized two ways to approach these required lessons:
Provide the required educational focuses required by the state
Write curriculum within the district with evidence-based practices for academic success
In doing so, our district has been able to focus only on the state requirements, but do so in a rich and meaningful way. For the FISD Counseling Department, we focus on developing personal skills in social settings, thus creating opportunities for emotional development in a social setting.
Approaching instruction this way allows us to develop systematic and intentional approach to building a safe school culture, providing trauma-informed practice, and establishing Tier 1 behavior Instruction. Each week, at every level, our campuses engage in instructional time to address learning as it relates to building a positive school and classroom environment.
If you would like to preview these lessons, you can login to The Portal and search “Whole Child Development Lessons”
If you would like to be a part of our community that values strong character, we encourage you to access our monthly character focuses and incorporate them into your own family. You can also support other students through our mentoring program. Resources for partnership in character development can be found below.
