Multi-Tiered Systems of Support’s comprehensive framework includes meeting each students’ academic, behavior and social-emotional needs. Within this system, students are placed on Tier 1, 2 or 3 based on their individual needs. As the Tier level increases from 1 to 3, the level of support provided progresses from classroom-wide support to targeted and intensive interventions.
This, also known as Tier 1 practices and systems, establish a foundation of regular, proactive support while building relationships and preventing unwanted behaviors. Tier 1 universal interventions and supports may include:
Schoolwide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS)
Clearly defined discipline procedures for staff
Schoolwide expectations posted around the school
Rules posted in common areas
Explicit teaching of rules throughout the year
Schoolwide system of acknowledgement
Campus team reviews schoolwide data to determine trends and develop responsive strategies
Classwide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports
Maximized classroom structure - orderly classroom environment, active supervision and classroom routines and procedures
Classroom expectations and treatment agreement
Classroom expectations aligned with schoolwide expectations and posted in the classroom
Explicitly taught classroom expectations throughout the year
Treatment agreement - collaboratively built with focus on how to treat one another between student-to-student, student-to-teacher and teacher-to-student.
Acknowledgment of Appropriate Behavior
Positively praise students
Reference expectations, treatment agreements and procedures during these positive interactions
Classwide system of acknowledgement includes group rewards and contingencies
Responding to Inappropriate Behavior
Use a variety of direct and indirect responses
Correct students in a private manner
Cultivating Relationships and Classroom Culture
Relationship-centered learning tools: 60-second relate break, 90-second spark, 2-minute connection tools
Frequent opportunities for capturing connections (student-to-student, student-to-teacher, and teacher-to-student)
This support should address behavior deficits by increasing instruction and opportunities to practice targeted skills. Tier 2 classroom management interventions can include, but are not limited to:
Social Skills Instruction
Weekly lessons (1-2 times a week)
Intentional planning for small groups (groups of <10)
Use preventative prompts prior to the needed use of the targeted skill
Check-in/Check-Out System
Standardized daily progress report
Standardized Check-in/Check-Out

Daily Progress Report

Includes feedback loop
Cultivating Relationships and Classroom Culture
Increase opportunities to connect with small groups of students outside of academics utilizing 60-second relate break, 90-second spark, 2-minute connection tools
Acknowledge Appropriate Behavior
Align rewards/contingencies based on identified student motivators
This support is utilized for students who are in need of systematic, intensive intervention in addition to Tier 1 and Tier 2 support. These students’ behaviors significantly impact their learning and/or the learning of others. The Student Support Team, in collaboration with the Campus Intervention Coach, will utilize resources in developing an action plan that considers the function of the behavior by reviewing student motivators and mitigating circumstances. Tier 3 classroom management interventions can include, but are not limited to:
Social Skills Instruction
Weekly lessons (3-5 times a week)
Intentional planning for small groups (groups of <5)
Frequent, skills-focused, individualized planned teaching
Prime/pre-correct prior to the opportunity to use a skill
